Cold showers are just what they sound like.
It’s a normal shower with the faucet turned to cold.
Why would anyone subject themselves to this torture? You probably already know.
Is there something you know you should be doing but you just can’t seem to get going on it? Maybe you have a worse problem.
You start and stop then pick it up a few months later. You have to start over again, so you keep going in circles. Cold showers can to put an end to the cycle.
You’re not going to want to do cold showers.
Whether it’s first thing in the morning or before bed, it’s the same struggle. There’s just no way to make it any easier.
Cold water always sucks. That’s why the elite US Navy SEALS use it in training. That’s why entrepreneurs have embraced it.
Cold showers teach you discipline. Brian Tracy says discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you’re supposed to do, when you’re supposed to do it, whether you feel like it or not.
There’s no better explanation of how cold showers teach you discipline.
You have to make yourself do it. Maybe you’re already taking a nice warm shower and you have to will yourself to turn it cold. Maybe you just woke up and you’re going to go straight in to a cold shower.
You have to do it when you’re supposed to do it. Most people shower between 8 – 9 minutes. A cold shower is just 5 minutes. Turning on the water is only half the battle. Staying in for the full time is the other half.
You have to do it whether you feel like it or not.
You learn a lot about the kind of excuses you make.
You’ll say to yourself “Was that a sniffle? Do I have a cold coming on? No cold shower for me.”
“What if I’m pregnant? I heard pregnant women shouldn’t take cold showers.”
“It’s winter time. The water is too cold this time of year, I’ll get hypothermia.”
You have to shut down the part of you that wants to back out. Be deaf to your own pleas for mercy.
Let the cold water wash away all your follies and your vanities.
When you endure, you are rewarded with discipline. You come away with the tools to conquer life.
You’re scared because you know that if you can’t take can’t take a cold shower that’s bad news. If you can’t be uncomfortable for 5 minutes, you aren’t going to achieve your dreams.
When you make it to 5 minutes you know you at least have the raw grit to take action. You have the mental strength to do something no one will see. You can suffer now to live a better life in the future.
But once is not enough. Once is an event. Cold showers are a process.
The process is changing yourself into the person you want to be. The process is the discipline. Discipline equals freedom. Cold showers equal discipline. So cold showers equal freedom.
The transitive property will get your dreams out of your head at night and into the daylight.
