Everything is hard before it’s easy. What was once a challenge becomes comfortable only when you’ve put in the necessary work. You work your heart out towards a goal. You slam into the barriers of your body and mind. Sometimes you break against them and have to rebuild and redouble your efforts. Sometimes you expand your capabilities and get closer to your goal. Repeat until successful.
Once you get your first taste of success, you embark on a never-ending mission of finding new goals that require increasing determination and persistence. Eventually you achieve those too, and it’s on to your next venture. This is how it should be – a limitless expedition of self improvement. Often, people settle for mediocre goals that require little to no effort. They know that it’s almost guaranteed that they will be successful in these endeavors. This is the comfort zone, a place where little growth occurs. It’s easy to feel comfortable. It’s difficult and uncomfortable to feel challenged. It requires you to raise your standards both physically and psychologically. Where are you on this spectrum?
Take a second to think about how high or low you’ve set your bar. Are you capable of more? Now think about why and how long you’ve been at this plateau. How do you feel after you’ve done something you knew you could already do? What excuses are you making for why you can’t do more? I can’t answer any of these questions for you; you’re the only one who can carefully consider why you remain in this comfort zone. Don’t go through the motions just to say you did something. Strive to do more.
Your body is capable of so much, but your mind makes it believe otherwise. You have to be willing to push harder to break down barriers you might not necessarily believe you’re capable of. This doesn’t mean go from zero to one hundred in one day. You’ll get injured before you ever get there. What you should do is take stock of your ambitions, plan, and coach your body and mind in ways that make you achieve them. If it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you.
